The New Wood competition 2025: Takeaway package of cartonboard to protect fragile bakery products
Uusi puu – The New Wood Project shows what wood can do. The project promotes wood-based innovations and provides information about them.
Grano Oy and MM Kotkamills Boards Oy have developed a range of fully recyclable takeaway packages for the bakery products of Bageri Å. Each package is a well-designed combination of protection, visual appeal and sustainability.
With the increased number of bakery-cum-cafés, the demand for high-quality, responsible takeaway packaging has also grown. The packages must protect the fragile products, while being easy to carry and visually attractive. They must also meet recyclability and material safety requirements.
To respond to this need, Grano Oy has developed a fully recyclable takeaway case, made of the food-safe ALASKA® BARRIER GREASE barrier board produced by MM Kotkamills Boards Oy. The packaging is specially designed for fragile bakery products: its structure protects the contents during transport, and the handle made of the same material makes it easy to carry. Also suitable as gift packaging, the case is easy to close, open and close again.
The case is made of virgin fibre cartonboard, which is highly grease- and waterproof due to a water-based barrier free of harmful fluorine compounds. The material prevents grease stains and ensures that the packaging remains stable even at low temperatures.
In addition to its protective qualities, the cartonboard provides a good surface for printing and thus helps add to the visual appeal of the packaging. The case is formed of a single cartonboard sheet with no add-on components. It can be recycled in cartonboard stream, enabling the fibres to be re-used for new paper or cartonboard products.
Designed by Tomi Leppänen and manufactured by Grano, the packaging solution is part of a broader shift towards fibre-based, easily recyclable food packaging, resulting from the increasing constraints on the use of plastics.
The food-safe and recyclable case is a practical and sturdy takeaway package made from raw materials that are procured responsibly. It’s an example of accelerating circularity through collaboration throughout the entire value chain.
