Ever new, fossil-free packaging solutions are being developed to improve product shelf life and prevent wastage. At the same time, companies wish to improve brand recognition and product quality as experienced by consumers. Kouvolan Lakritsi, Metsä Board and the packaging design company Futupack wanted to create an attractive packaging which would be easy to use and recycle.

The liquorice cup was developed on the basis of an existing material. The cup and its lid are both made from a PE-coated cartonboard made by Metsä Board, so their inside is coated with a thin plastic barrier. Both cup and lid can be recycled as paperboard.

The tub design makes it easy to open and close. Once empty, the tub can be used as a drinking vessel – the same cartonboard is also used to make cups for both hot and cold drinks.

The liquorice cup can easily be personalized, as it is possible to print even small batches of lids with the desired logo. This makes it an excellent choice for fundraising items for schools and sports clubs.
